Asia-Pacific Military Medicine Conference XXI Sydney, Australia

Delegates from 23 countries gathered from 2 – 6 May in Sydney in order to continue the annual exchange of ideas between the Pacific Rim states. As in 2010 in Jakarta, the main focus was on collaboration to deal with natural catastrophes following this year’s events in New Zealand and, especially, Japan. The Australian hosts headed by Major General Paul Alexander, Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force, provided a worthy setting for the conference. The programme developed with the heads of the United States Army Pacific Command and the Jackson Foundation was strong and thematically well-balanced. The delegations of the guest states included many high-ranking members and the presentations and informal forums provided plentiful opportunities for the exchange of professional ideas.

Welcome Address

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you all to the 21st Asia Pacific Military Medicine Conference on be half of Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston, The Chief of the Australian Defence Force. It is an honour to co-host this conference with Brigadier General Keith Gallagher, Command Surgeon, United States Army Pacific Command. It is pleasing to see so many nations of our region represented at this year’s conference. Given the challenges that have been faced across the region this year, the floods and cyclones in Queensland, the earthquake in New Zealand an the earthquake and Tsunami in Japan, the theme of this years‘ conference „One Team: Partnerships, Joint Medical operations and Wounded Warrier Care“ is particularly timely. Recent events have highlighted the need for health professionals to be able to work together seamlessly. Some of these experiences will be explored in more depth throughout the breakout and plenary sessions. The quality of presentations and posters is of a very high standard and I am looking forward to hearing about your experiences. I trust that this year’s conference allows you to renew old acquaintances, develop to new networks and share your experiences in a positive and reflective environment. I also hope that you are able to enjoy some of the sights of Sydney and experience Australian hospitality.
